Description

The food industry is one of the industries that has evolved in a different manner during this time. In several countries, the sales of raw food have increased and people are more inclined to making their own food instead of eating out. The restaurants and public eating places were closed by the governments across the countries and footfall in restaurants have decreased significantly. In fact, WHO also warned that the world is going to face one of the worst food crisis due to the recession caused by the Covid-19. Several food manufacturing factories were closed down due to their inability to run with no funds. At the beginning of the pandemic, there was panic buying resulting in a severe shortage of food in several major cities and eventually resulting in wastage of a large amount of food due to its perishable nature.

Despite the major disturbances faced by the industry, there are some segments such as online groceries and online food purchasing that increased significantly. The whole industry moved to digitalization and the trends that were supposed to be coming in the five years were launched quickly bringing more ease to the customers. Even the small scale farmers have adopted the use of digital distribution networks that have helped them gain an access to the direct consumers and we believe that there will be more opportunities in the coming years.
